When you have a baby (덮어놓고 낳다보면)
Installation
2024
South Korea is currently facing a very serious birthrate crisis. The government has been trying to encourage births in various ways, but it hasn’t changed much. I think the reason for fewer babies being born is not just a personal choice but a big issue that affects the whole society. The title, “덮어놓고 낳다보면”which implies “When you have a baby, you become a beggar” that was one of the most famous of the government’s birth control slogan in the 60s, satirises a society that has advocated contradictory positions within a span of less than 100 years.
Government-led public service announcement slogans, strategically placed on walls, exert psychological pressure, while images of societal challenges hindering childbirth, such as the seemingly cozy baby’s room that reveals complexities upon closer inspection, encapsulate the intricate and ambivalent emotions experienced by young people in South Korea; navigating the delicate balance between love for children and the burdens associated with childbirth.
